The fear of the LORD “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Prov. 1:7

The fear of the LORD is a good thing. Humanistic psychology teaches much about self-esteem, but this is counter to God’s teaching as we will read in the following study on “the fear of the LORD”. It is not all about us, it is about God deserving all the credit and honour beginning with a healthy dose of fear and humility. Let’s find out more by reading the following about positive fear.

The fear of the LORD makes you wise: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth forever.” Psm. 111:10

The fear of the LORD causes you to move: “He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee in the houses. And he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field.” Exod. 9:20-21. (Then, hail and fire mingled with hail smote both man and beast and every herb of the field in all the land of Egypt.)

A place without the fear of the LORD is a dangerous place to be. “And Abraham thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake.”        Gen 20:11

The fear of the LORD encourages faith and brings mercy. “And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.” Gen 22:12

The fear of the LORD will prolong your life. “That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee…and that thy days be prolonged.” Deut. 6:2

If your children have close associations with children that do not fear the LORD, it will cause your children to cease from fearing the LORD. “For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD.”      Josh. 22:25

You are never too young to fear the LORD. “…but I thy servant fear the LORD from thy youth.” I Sam. 18:12

A woman that fears the LORD shall be praised. “Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.” Prov. 31:30

They that fear the LORD will think of Him and speak of Him often. “Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before them that feared the LORD, and thought upon his name.” Mal. 3:16
