“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. II Timothy 3:1-5

Did you know that cults have been a part of society from the very beginning of world history, even since the Garden of Eden? Did you know that the very first cult leader was and continues to be, Satan, the god of this world? When we think about cults and their effects, our mind recoils at the thought of a person or group manipulating unsuspecting people into believing a false ideology with promises attached for their own gain. At worst, it can lead to tragic consequences, including death; at best, the broken spirit of an abandoned victim. Some may tend to envision a group of people dancing around a fire accompanied with incessant, hypnotizing drum beats. Some may think of historically well documented tragic events that resulted in the death of large groups of adherents, such as the Jim Jones cult tragedy at Jonestown in 1978 where 909 people were murdered/committed suicide; or, David Koresh’s Branch Davidians’ massacre at Waco, Texas in 1993. Still others may think of the relatively quiet, “good”, “family” based cults such as the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, or Seventh Day Adventists and yes, even the Catholic Church’s Magisterium, promoting the cult of Mary. The truth is: anyone who does not adhere strictly to the tenets of scripture, anyone who rewrites and imposes it on the innocent to suit themselves with wealth and power is guilty of forming a cult.

“Cult”, Defined

Believe it or not, interestingly, my 1828 Webster’s Dictionary does not contain the word, “cult”. However, after an objective study of the word I would offer this fair description in the context of scripture:

A cult is a result of the departure from the written doctrines of God’s Word, the Holy Bible, by one schismatic; as taught to and accepted by another with unquestioning loyalty who is then held in bondage for the ultimate purpose of the schismatic’s gain.

From Wikipedia: “A schism is a division between people, usually belonging to an organization, movement, or religious denomination. The word is most frequently applied to a split in what had previously been a single religious body. It is also used of a split within a non-religious organization or movement or, more broadly, of a separation between two or more people, be it brothers, friends, lovers, etc.”.

“That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another” I Cor. 12.25

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” Gal 1:8

The Garden of Eden

Taking a closer look at the scriptures in Genesis 3:1-7, firstly, we see a cult of personality type embodied in the serpent described as being, “subtil” or slippery and sly with a hidden agenda. Lifting himself up, he casts doubt on God by asking Eve, “Yea, hath God said…?” Then, in v.3, Eve replies by misquoting Adam to the serpent that God had told him, “Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.” And, then in v.4, the serpent calls God a liar, telling Eve, “Ye shall not surely die…”, but, instead, “your eyes shall be opened…” in v.5. This temptation was all Eve needed to be drawn away of her own lusts and, being enticed, sinned, which lead her to give to Adam, who brought sin into the world and death by sin after which their eyes were opened to their nakedness.
Adam and Eve’s focus were diverted from their Heavenly Father. Their focus was turned inwardly and chose to worship self instead of God by accepting the lie from a deceiver with a promise of making themselves higher and greater than they were intended to be. They chose, at that moment, not to remember that God takes care of all our needs and that God does not need our help in any way. All God wants is our worship of Him. However, at that moment, Adam and Eve did not want to need to trust in God. All it takes is a moment. This is our first example of the worship of self, but be careful not to point your finger at them since three fingers are pointed right back at you! Are we not guilty of this sin ourselves? Why do we ever worry when it appears we cannot meet our obligations? If we would only trust in the Lord and keep His commandments, He already has taken care of that need! If we only choose to follow Him at His Word, He has blessings to bestow on us that we cannot even contain!

The Tower of Babel

Sin came by Adam and was passed upon all men and continued after the flood. After the global flood had destroyed all living substance of creation and after the earth was once again replenished with people, sin again covered the whole earth. At that time, there rose up a man who was called, Nimrod, (also known as Marduk or Gilgamesh; after that God confounded their universal language). This was the son of Cush of the line of Noah’s son, Ham, the same son who saw his father naked after having been drunken and passed out in his tent. Nimrod, the Bible teaches, was a great hunter of man’s souls. History bears out that Nimrod was very well revered by the people during this time along with his wife, Semiramis, also known as Ishtar, (pronounced, “Easter”).

“And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” Gen.11:4

According to the scriptures, his people wanted to build a tower, or a stairway to heaven as it were, so they would not be scattered over the whole earth. As Adam before them, they did not want to need to trust in God. Instead, they wanted to trust in themselves. We have a great little book entitled, “Babylon Religion”, written by David W. Daniels of Chick Publications in California. This book details what happens when you do not follow scriptures and go your own way. It really demonstrates that a cult was hatched in Babylon and is still being practiced today. This religion, having well in excess of one billion adherents is called, Roman Catholicism. Many of the false teachings that the dear Catholic folks are in bondage to originate in ancient Babylon. Some commonly held requirements of Catholicism that were started in Babylon include: the bread wafer, Eucharist; the confessional booth; and the priesthood, known to be holy and in charge of the care of souls and could send you to an eternity in hell. The Catholic catechism is full of thousands of other tenets and requirements that place our dear Catholic friends in bondage under that cult. After Nimrod was hacked to pieces by godly Shem, Semiramis became “miraculously” pregnant and claimed that the baby inside her was the reincarnation of Nimrod. After her son, Tammuz (or Baal), was born, she married him. That is the true origin of the Catholic Church, where their pagan interpretation of the immaculate birth comes from: Babylon. What about the image with the woman with the babe in arms? That is supposed to be Semiramis and Tammuz, an inseparable pair forever and indelibly marked upon society by the Catholic Church as, “Mary and Jesus”, even until today. Even further, Tammuz was conceived at Easter time, a well-revered pagan holiday, which is even celebrated by born again Christian folks. Remember, “Ishtar” (Easter)? She is the pagan fertility goddess. Have you ever wondered where the egg and rabbit symbols come from? They are fertility symbols in nearly every culture throughout history. Speaking of fertility, the human gestation period is 40 weeks; calculate 40 weeks from Easter, in April. What day is that? Christmas! So, a very serious question arises: are we truly worshipping Christ’s birth or, by the cult of personality, unknowingly celebrating Baal’s birth? Ask the Pagans. They will tell you! Because, Christmas is yet another holiday instituted by the Catholic Church to gain power and control over them. The “Church” did so because they could not succeed in stopping the pagans from performing their drunken solstice celebration of reveling, drunkenness, burning sacrifices, rape, murder, and the many other debaucheries that occurred during that time. (Also, refer to “The Two Babylons”, by Hislop, available at Christ The Way Bookstore.)
This is an example of departing from God’s Word and pushing someone to believe in their own twisted doctrine to satisfy their own selfish gain. From the Catholic’s own books we hear, you must remain in the Catholic Church to be saved. Then, they tell the dear folks that they must pay tribute to them and fulfill seven sacraments. They are placed under severe duress and if they do not obey they are in danger of excommunication. This cultic teaching is in stark contrast to God’s Word, which says in John 6:37b:

“…him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”

The origin of the Tower of Babel was most certainly that genesis of a man-made cult, the departing from God’s teachings in His Word has formed Roman Catholicism. What we see today is no different. It is a cult. I would go so far as to say, it continues to be the greatest cult in the history of the world and is more powerful today than ever. But, it is the worship of self in the deepest way. It is no wonder that the Catholic Church continues to join-up with the world as the world slides deeper and deeper into the cult of self-adoration.

The New Age

This is the modern day cult that the Bible was speaking of when it said, “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.” The world is in a free fall down into perdition; with their only accepted hope being psychology, self-seeking, and the belief that they will evolve into something better in the next life. This time period in history is the darkest time we have ever seen, because the abandonment of God’s Word has turned us into a blind and hopeless generation. This New Age is the epitome of cults in that it is a global cult; one that will culminate in the worship of one man, that Son of Perdition, the Antichrist as described in the Book of Revelation. We can see the New Age machine lumbering along today, slowly grinding everyone down into accepting their New World Order. This insidious cult needs many powerful allies to make up the parts in their machine: The U.N., The Council on Foreign Relations, the Bilderberg Group, The World Bank and Central Banks in every country, The Club of Rome, the liberal media and Hollywood. Also, their legal enforcers: the World Courts, the ACLU in America, along with all the Marxist-Socialist slanted legislators in every country, with America leading the way with their socialist foreign policies. Together, these menaces intend to change society into a world without God and turn the hearts of the global community to believe that God is in each one of us; resulting in a massive global cult of self-worship. They will enforce that we will not have to go to an ecclesiastical place of worship, we can simply sit down in our yoga pose and worship whatever god meets us right there on the spot. They teach us pantheism – the doctrine that God is in everything; and the doctrine of panentheism – God is everything. This is the worst kind of cult: they teach us to believe in ourselves, they teach us to follow our hearts and that there are no moral absolutes, no God to answer to except only ourselves. What does God who created our heart say about our hearts?

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Jer. 17:9

What does God command us? Just as Jesus, who is, God, said to Satan, the god of this world, during his temptation:

“And Jesus answered and said unto him, get thee behind me Satan, for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” Luke 4:8

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:24

Cults have been in existence since the very beginning, from the Garden of Eden to the Tower of Babel through to the many worldviews taught today. To have a cult, God must be removed from the equation and self must be placed in its stead as God. Teachings about psychology, particularly the doctrine of self-esteem, is in direct opposition to God’s Word that teaches we must sacrifice ourselves. We must give up ourselves. Our bodies are a living sacrifice, which is reasonable to give.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1

Of course, the New Agers do not want to answer to an Almighty Creator, God. They must get rid of God, but in so doing they make themselves, “god”. With that comes the doctrine of no moral relativism and Alistair Crowley’s occult, Law of Thelema, ‘do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.’ This is a major global cult, but the end of it is this: the god of this world wants to defeat God and His creation and he believes that he can succeed. He wants every eternal soul to join him in that place prepared for the Devil and his angels – a fiery eternity in Hell. Cults are merely an age old trick of the Devil to drag as many as he can with him into perdition. As saved people, we must be sure to arm ourselves with the letter of God’s Word so as not to be deceived. Stay in the Word, pray unceasingly and keep His commandments!

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”
II Tim. 4:2

If you are not saved – do not fall for the wiles of the cults! They are lying to you! You still have a choice: either follow the God of the Bible or follow a counterfeit. The counterfeit becomes the cult and without God, you will only worship self. You can break from that bondage today if you have not already. Admit you are a sinner. Believe that Jesus died for you and that His blood paid for all of your sins. Confess them with your mouth in prayer, only to God Himself. He is ever present waiting for you. He wants to hear from you and wants you to turn away from the cult of self to the true and living God. ~R.
